Genioplasty, also known as chin surgery or chin augmentation, is a surgical procedure aimed at enhancing the shape, size, or position of the chin to improve facial harmony and balance. This procedure can involve either augmenting or reducing the chin bone to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome. Additionally, mandible osteoplasty or jaw contouring can be done to narrow the mandible bone to make a more oval or “V-shaped” jawline.

Did you know…

Genioplasty and mandible osteoplasty are done through intraoral incisions. Therefore, there are no external scars once you have healed. These procedures are for men, cis-gendered, or transgender women that desire a narrower mandible or chin reduction for more balanced facial contours.

Who is a Candidate?

Candidates for genioplasty typically include individuals who are seeking to increase the projection or prominence of the chin to achieve better facial proportions. However, some individuals with an overly prominent or asymmetrical chin seek to reduce its size or adjust its shape.

Candidates for mandible osteoplasty or jaw contouring have a wide or square jawline. These patients desire a more oval or narrow mandible to have a more feminine jawline.

Ideal candidates should be in good overall health, have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the surgery, and be psychologically prepared for the changes in facial appearance.

What to Expect During the Procedure

General anesthesia is typically used to ensure comfort throughout the procedure. Incisions are made either inside the mouth (intraoral approach). The surgeon may use techniques to either augment or reduce the chin bone. For augmentation, implants or bone grafts may be used, while reduction involves carefully reshaping the existing bone.

The duration of the procedure varies based on the complexity of the surgery and the specific techniques used.

Post-Operative Recovery

You may experience swelling, bruising, numbness, and mild discomfort around the chin and lower face for 1-2 weeks. Pain medications and cold compresses can help manage these symptoms. The sutures inside the mouth are absorable and will dissolve. You can start a soft food diet and will use antibiotic mouth rinse. Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first week. Your surgeon will provide specific guidelines on when you can resume normal activities.

The final results of genioplasty or mandible osteoplasty may take several weeks to months to fully manifest as swelling subsides and tissues settle.
