When people think about how their appearance impacts their self-esteem, they are often most concerned about their face because this is how people identify one another. A common cause of concern for people at a young age is the size, shape, or asymmetry of their ears. Ear surgery or otoplasty is used to change the shape of the ears. This can include bringing them closer to the scalp and changing the folds of the ear. It can also alter the size of the ears to make them more symmetrical.
Did You Know…?
The ear reaches 85% of its adult size by the age of 6. Therefore, otoplasty is one of the only cosmetic procedures that can be safely performed on children as early as the age of 5 or 6. Otoplasty is done to correct birth deformities or pin back the ears if a child feels concerned with the appearance of their ears. On the other hand, many people have traumatic experiences that damage their ears, such as during competitive wrestling, that can also be addressed using otoplasty surgery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is a candidate?
A candidate for otoplasty is anyone that is concerned about the shape, size or asymmetry of their ears and is at least 5 years old. Ideal candidates are healthy and non-smokers.
What to Expect During the Procedure?
Younger patients will undergo general anesthesia while other patients only require a local anesthesia and can be done in the procedure room. The plastic surgeon will make an incision along the back of the ear to ensure that any scars aren’t visible from the front. The tissue will then be manipulated during the procedure to match the expectations of the patient as closely as possible. The ears are dressed with a compression dressing at the end of the procedure to keep it covered while it heals.
Post-Operative Recovery
The results of otoplasty are immediate, but swelling and minor discomfort can be expected for the first week of surgery. You will be given post operative instructions for incision care and oral medications to take. Sutures are removed in 1 week. You will have a soft band that you wear around your ears for about 2 weeks to allow the ears to heal in place. The results of otoplasty are long-lasting.
